Organización de Estudiantes Latino-Americanos (OELA)

OELA

E-mail: oela_news@yahoogroups.com

OELA is a student organization run by students of BSU. OELA's purpose is to encourage higher education among Hispanic people and to raise funds to be used for high school scholarships, activities, and educational-related purposes. OELA develops assertive citizenship with the spirit of service toward improving human relationships and encourages Hispanic studies to perpetuate the Hispanic culture, all directed for community enrichment. OELA not only has a political and cultural influence in the Hispanic community, but also in the general community.

Our organization is active in activities such as helping high schools establish their own OELA organizations. We have also been involved annually with BSU's Martin Luther King, Jr. / Human Rights Celebration, Rake Up Boise, and Into the Streets.

With the help of an active member, our organization established a Mexican Folkloric Dance Group in the Fall of 1990. The objective of the dance group is to promote cultural awareness of the Mexican culture through folk dances from different regions of Mexico.

Every year in May, we celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a fiesta of food booths, exhibitions, dance troupes and raffles. Cinco de Mayo is an example of how important it is to share our culture with everyone, so they may appreciate it and be aware of the diversity that exists in our community.

If you would like more information about our club, please call our our advisor, Juan Martinez at 426-1732 or our co-advisor Everardo Torrez at 426-3038.

This semester our meetings are held every Wednesday at 4:30 pm in the Student Union Building. Please check at a room directory kiosk or with the Information Desk to locate the room that is scheduled.

We thank you for your interest!
